Could it be the ignition switch instead?
It could. That's why we test rather than guess. A voltage-drop test tells us in minutes whether the starter is getting the signal and just not working, or not getting the signal at all.
My car starts if I tap the starter — is that a fix?
It's a warning. Worn brushes or a sticking solenoid will quit for good soon, usually at the worst time. Replace it before it strands you.
